Singapore’s latest green icon, Marina Barrage, is a dam, built across the mouth of Marina Channel to create Singapore’s 15th reservoir, and the first in the heart of the city. It serves three benefits: water supply, flood control, and lifestyle destination for all to enjoy.
Designed by Architects Team 3 The Marina barrage building’s ‘number nine’ shape is deliberate: ‘Nine’ is traditionally associated by the Chinese with longevity.
It is also designed and built on green principles. Its iconic green roof serves as an insulation layer to lower indoor temperature, thereby reducing the building’s air-conditioning requirements.
It also boasts the largest collection of solar panels in Singapore – 405 in all, which convert solar energy into utility grade electricity to supplement the daytime power requirements of the Marina Barrage.
The Sustainable Singapore Gallery, housed within the Marina Barrage aims to educate the public on important environmental and water issues through interactive multimedia displays, exhibits and games.
Whether you want a day out with the family, a sunset watching evening with friends or a lunch break away from the office, there is something for everyone at the barrage’s dam, promenade bridge and its distinctive building housing pumps, galleries and eateries.
